If
the ground were able to feel, how would our movement upon its immense
epidermis be perceived? Probably something in between a sensation of impact
or a light gentle touch. Everything is held in place underneath what seems
like the stretched out skin over a mother's womb. Crossing the Threshold
is a performative installation which portrays the gradual withdrawal of
a dying person, the mark of a being in development.
Combining
digital art and physical theatre, the installation uses a form that resembles
a slab of earth (3m x 3m x 1.2m) which has been dug up and placed vertically.
One side is covered with vegetation and a rectangular opening has been
cut out to make room for a person (the performer). On the other side,
a screen fits into an opening in the dried mud wall. The performer's videographic
imprint is projected onto the screen. From this side, the performer's
body resembles a fetus floating in its mother's amniotic fluid. Back to
back, the topside and underside of the ground are evocative of two portals
of human experience: gestation and dying.
