The enigmatic quality of Crossing the Threshold reveals the fact that the actor appears to be born and die simultaneously using one single movement. Lasting 15 minutes, the activity seen from the vegetative side speaks of states of being at the end of life where the body passes from a state of full vitality to total laxity. This struggle against gravity is revealed bit by bit in the video projected image. To acheive this effect, the performer takes position on a pane of plexiglass hidden in the installation. His points of contact, lit up by flourescent lights, are captured by a webcam located under the plexiglass. This device was inspired by the podoscope, an instrument used to visualize the arch of the foot. The image is filtered in real time into Eyesweb, then projected from the inside with the help of two mirrors. The resulting image is in continous motion sliding into an abstract form. Crossing the Threshold also demonstrates a sophisticated acoustic dimension. Five small loud speakers plus a subwoofer are hidden within the structure in order to create an acoustic space of 360 degrees. Emanating from the interior of the installation, the soundtrack offers two ambient tracks, which play simultaneously and are heard according to where visitors are situated. One track plays aerial sounds and the other subterranean sounds. This difference amplifies the sensation of being above or under ground. |
